Celebration of Mass
from Next Weekend – Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 July
The following guidelines may seem daunting, but they have been agreed by the government and the bishops. We will begin by celebrating Mass on Saturday at 10am and 6.30pm and on Sunday at 9.30 and 11.30 as usual.
The numbers allowed to come to Mass are very limited indeed and dependent upon social distancing, church layout etc. and for each church this is different – our safe church capacity is 60. It is not possible for any priest to say multiple Masses to make up for the usual congregation numbers. The Bishops point out that the there is no obligation to attend Mass over the weekend. As numbers able to go into a church are limited, they suggest that you think of going to Mass on a weekday instead. Do be generous towards others. Think about not always coming to Mass each week as spaces are so limited. Give others the opportunity as well. You can continue to watch Mass via live stream or radio as you have been doing. Unfortunately, because of social distancing and other safety regulations, stewards may advise you that the church capacity is now full. Be understanding of them in their difficult task. It is not possible for Fr Peter to say additional Masses to cover all those who normally come as he also has to provide cover at St Patrick’s.
Our Church is compact and because of the factors above and the need to ensure additional space between people in such an enclosed area we will be observing the two meter rule.
Face coverings or masks will need to be worn, provided by you, by everyone – unless they have severe breathing difficulties. This applies also to all children over 5 years old.
You will need to sanitise your hands on entrance and exit, follow any signage and be guided by the stewards at all times. Statues have been removed and please do not touch those which remain or the stations of the cross. You are not able to wander freely round the church and need to ask a steward if you would like a candle lit. They will do this for you.
Mass, in the present circumstances, will be much shorter than usual. There will be no hymns or music and some of the prayers and readings will be changed or omitted. There will be no offertory procession but your collection may be left when you come in or leave, via the baskets.
No one is allowed in the sacristy area and, because of the requirements of social distancing and other safety guidelines, only Fr Peter will read, be on the sanctuary and distribute communion.
Communion will be given at the end of Mass, by the host only, on to your outstretched hand. You will consume it as you walk out of the church to the exit. It is not possible for you to return to your seat. As you leave, sanitise your hands. It is not possible for you to gather in the porch and outside you need to maintain the 2 metre distance.
The toilets will not be available in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
